Overall Functions of the Ministry

  1. Coordinate and facilitate the review, development and implementation of clear and concise national environment, climate, The Ministry is responsible for change meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity policies, legal instruments, regulations, strategies and principles;
  2. Facilitate the development and adoption of best practices and measures that address and reduce the impact of extreme weather events, climate change, environmental degradation and biodiversity loss for the protection of society;
  3. Ensure the mainstreaming of environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity is done across all sectors in consultation with relevant stakeholders;
  4. Ensure the protection conservation of environment and natural resources for the benefit of current and future generations;
  5. Adopt a devolution approach to build consensus among all stakeholders in decisions and actions to ensure ownership and public confidence in environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity;
  6. Provide leadership in education and awareness on environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity
  7. Facilitate and liaise, cooperate and coordinate with all relevant government line ministries, departments, parastatals, business community, civil society, development partners and the regional and international community;
  8. Coordinate and provide leadership in the country’s participation in and implementation of Bilateral, Regional, and Multi-lateral Protocols, Conventions and Agreements relating to environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity management;
  9. Facilitate and advise on the domestication and implementation of bilateral and multilateral agreements relating to environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity as an obligation of Zimbabwe’s adoption and signature;
  10. Facilitate and conduct action research on environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity issues in their complexities and ensure that the research is translated into usable form for national development;
  11. Mobilise financial resources from all sources locally and internationally towards environment, climate, meteorology, seismology, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity management;
  12. Generate, collate, analyse and disseminate climate, weather, seismology, environment, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity information for planning, early warning action, advisory services and decision making.
  13. Supervise, monitor and facilitate the work of all parastatals and state agencies operating under the Ministry.
  14. Facilitate and promote investments in climate, weather, seismology, environment, wildlife, fisheries and biodiversity as key enablers and contributors to the national economy;
  15. Establish and maintain synergies and areas of complementarity with other relevant sectoral policies to ensure consideration of cross-cutting issues.
